Different Types of Disability
There are two SSA programs that may pay benefits to disabled Virginians: Disability Insurance Benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. For both programs, the claimant must be disabled under SSA’s particular medical standards. In addition, each of the two programs has its own non-medical legal standard. Disability Insurance Benefits are based on work history, and Supplemental Security Income payments are based on household income and resources.
Disability Insurance Benefits entitlement and payment amounts are based on your work history. The benefit amount that you will receive depends on how long you have worked, your amount of pay, and how much you have paid into the SSA system. The higher your salary and the longer that you have worked, the higher your payments will be because you will have paid more into the SSA system. In order to receive disability benefits under the Disability Insurance program you must have worked and paid in to SSA a certain amount over a certain time period. The specific work and payment requirements are complicated and can vary from person to person, but your attorney can explain how the requirements affect your particular situation. If you have not worked long enough during the necessary period of time to qualify for Disability Insurance benefits, you may still be able to receive disability payments through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
The Supplemental Security Income program is based on household income and resources If you are not eligible for Disability insurance benefits, you may be eligible for supplemental security benefits if you are medically disabled and if your household income and resources are low.
